The first stop for most visitors to Kingstown must be the Botanical Gardens, the oldest botanical garden in the world. It was rather beautiful, but showing its age (and less immediately pleasing to the eye than the more manicured, but impeccable gardens on Martinique and St. Lucia). This lovely little building has a tragic story to it: it used to be the archaeological museum, but its run-down, dilapidated state meant that artefacts were walking out of the building at an alarming rate. The collections are now temporarily housed underneath Kingstown's Publice Library building, in anticipation of better times. |
