Looking east from the El Morro fort in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the foreground lies the cemetery and one of the old gates into the city, and further off, clinging to the outer city walls, La Perla, the community described by anthropologist Oscar Lewis in the 1960s. It was just before taking this picture that I found out I had shot an entire roll's worth of film in Old San Juan without film in the camera. I hate it when that happens, and even though I swore (and swore) that it would never happen again, it did recently in Antwerp.
