After announcing our arrival to a random man in an overall, touristt-awareness syndrome slowly kicked in. We were directed to the front desk where we paid a small sum of money, and were then instructed to follow the mumbling random man we had first spoken to: this was the guide! We were given a basic lesson in the main spices dealt with at the nutmeg plant, being nutmeg and mace. Our guide rattled through his story, which he had obviously memorised off by heart and it was clear from the first minute that he was not too interested in dwelling on any aspect for too long or in being asked questions! We followed the guide upstairs, where we were shown the enormous shelves that ran the length of the building, where the nutmeg, upon arriving, is initially dried.
