We were lucky enough to be able to go inside, as there was a small choir rehearsal going on.
The church turned out to be equally impressive inside. A colourful mural formed the backdrop for the altar, which, in an intriguing example of religious synchretism, was in fact a Carib canoe. It must be with a curious sense of ambivalence that churchgoing Carib attend this particular church that embodies the encounter between two worlds, an encounter that has brought the Carib little good over time.
